the Malay Peninsula and the Dutch Indies has also added to the
number of destitutes passing through the hospital whilst the
increasing emigration to Central and Southern America has re-
-sulted in considerable numbers of Chinese being sent back to
Hongkong at one time or another by the Chinese Consul at Yokoha-
-Ina.
4.
In reply to my enquiries the Directors
inform me that the number of male destitutes received by the
hospital during the last five years la:-
in 1905......833: in 1906..................
.1,219 (typhoon): in 1907...
658: in 1908......2,493: and in 1909..............2,066:
that the greatest number of destitutes to be housed at any one
time was 67 and that they are of opinion that accommodation
should be provided for 100 men. I concur in their views.
5.
I understand that since the destruction of
the greater part of Taipingshan the latrine mentioned by the
Directors is not much used and that even if it could not be
entirely done away with it, it might be considerably reduced in
size and removed perhaps to the top of Po Yan Street immediately
under Hospital Road.
The Honourable
Sir Henry May, K.C.M.G.,
Colonial Secretary.

Registrar-General.
